When I was there I felt safe, as long as I was in public places during the day and not alone. Its like any city, there crime waiting to happen. But we went sightseeing and shopping in the very nice mall on the water front and had no problems.

Hi. I'm from South Africa and I lived in Cape Town. Yes it is safe and a wonderful place to visit. And yes there is crime and poverty but it's not all bad. You have to be cautious and wise: like don't walk alone in the middle of the night. Plan with a travel agent. There is lots to do and a beautiful place to visit. You would be going in winter which is a pity cause it is the windy and rainy season.
Pop round to Fish Hoek it's a coastal town. I'm from there. It's beautiful Kalk Bay has cobble stone roads with quirky, bohemian style shops and cafe's overlooking the sea. You can then drive over to Simonstown to see the penguins and navel base. Lots more to do. Hope you enjoy it.

hi there, if you notice every one who lives in cape town alays says its safe!!!! i lived in south africa with my family for 3 years , i am now 24 at the time i was there with mum dad and brother i was 14........ so as a child which i was then ill give you my opinion. weather great, for the first 4 weeks it was like a holiday, beach was great , lots to see, you definatly need to stay pretty close to where your accommodation is are the tourist parts...... dont wonder off there are a few townships not too far away........ every one loves the english over ther...... dont know where your from, sorry. i personally did not think there was a lot for children, unless your prepared to travel all the way to the other end of south africa whee sun city is, man made beaches and water slides.... amazing but its a days travel away in a car. the only other thing that bothered me and my parents did not like me going in the see because it is well known for sharks.... hope i have not scared you to death.... thought it would help having an opinion from when i was a child

Depends where you are and what you do really mate. I went two years ago on my own, stayed in a hostel and had a cracking time. I wouldnt know what there is for a family to do there though as Cape Town itself isnt that interesting, theres lots of historical stuff but that can be done in a day. There is loads of 'extreme' type activities to do though and it is in an ideal position to let you explore the Cape. The nature reserve is well worth a visit and Table Mountain is mind blowing.

It is safer than the rest of SA, just be aware that you are coming to an urban city in a country with a high crime rate. If you are aware of yourself, family and surroundings and don't take unnecessary risks you should be fine.

terrible crime rates in places. Check the www.fco.gov.uk for advice.
