How can I locate my father in South Africa?

He's a bum and a criminal, but he lives in South Africa (or at least, he did, the last I ever heard from him, 15 years ago).

I can't afford a private detective.

Can I just go to a police station with his ID number and ask if he's still in jail? Would they even give that kind of information up?

Any advice would be very useful

Try contacing the department of Home Affairs, they may be able to help...this is South Africa - there is not much help.. just incompotence in most government departments.

Home Affairs may require some additional information like birth certificate of yours/his last know address...

The so-called police? or prison? services may also be worth contacting ask the department of home affairs for contact details or do a web search.

Dont hold your breath this is after all

Thats going to be a tough one. The police in south africa now a days are pathetic. But anyway you can try the Home Affairs department here or go to a police station and give them your fathers name and surname etc and they might help you. They should give information like this up because you are his daughter. Maybe a birth certificate of you with your dads name on will help even more. Good luck!

You could possibly contact the "YOU" magazine as they have pages dedicated to people trying to find other people.



The best advice I can offer is to perhaps ask at your nearest police station about finding out whether he is still in jail or on parole.
