I am deciding between Garmin, TomTom and the others out there. I plan on adding South Africa maps, but wanted to know if anyone could recommend the hardware.

Garmin, TomTom, Magellan these are the best brands in gps. Garmin Nuvi 255W , Garmin Nuvi 265WT, Garmin Nuvi 765T, Garmin Streetpilot and the Magellan Maestro and Magellan Roadmate series are all good models to choose from. You can check out the features and buy the one best suited for your needs. go for ones that give turn-by-turn directions using street names not something that says turn left, turn right but something that actually gives out the street name - saying turn right into Cherry lane. So you can verify and know you are correctly following the directions. Go for ones that have clear large display. Also the quality of the display should be equally good in all light conditions. Else you will be left squinting at the directions when you need to concentrate on your driving.

Garmin is definitely the most common and most popular GPS system in SA, but I have a TomTom and it works just as well but is a bit cheaper (I have used both so I have been able to compare). Free South African map updates are available online for both.

I wouldn't really recommend any of the other lesser known brands because from what I've seen their maps are not really very complete/ up to date.

Garmin is a awesome GPS unit. You can actually download all the SA maps to your unit at no cost.

Check there website out for more details.

Garmin definitely have the best up to date and accurate maps. Look at their Nuvi range.

I think the best answer is TomTom XL Classic
